Why test

Ammonia is a strong respiratory and eye irritant. It comes from cleaning products, refrigeration systems, fertilisers, animal areas and some building and industrial processes.

The reason it needs measuring rather than smelling is olfactory fatigue: people go nose-blind to ammonia within minutes of entering a space, so the person who lives or works there is the least reliable judge of how much is present. Chronic low-level exposure aggravates asthma and respiratory conditions; acute high exposure causes chemical burns to the airway.

How to run the badge

Choose the room — the laundry, the space near a refrigeration unit, the room with the litter tray, or wherever cleaning products are used or stored. Open the sealed pouch and immediately write down the exact start time. Place the badge at breathing height (3–5 ft), in the middle of the room, away from vents, windows, purifiers and direct sun — nothing draped over it.

Leave it undisturbed for 8 to 12 hours with the space used and ventilated as normal. Seal it back in the pouch, record the end time, and post it the same day. Return within 14 days of use.

How the lab analyzes it

The badge captures ammonia onto a chemically treated collection medium as it diffuses in. At the laboratory the medium is extracted into solution and the ammonium ion is measured by ion chromatography, which separates ions on an analytical column and quantifies them by conductivity.

Because the uptake rate is characterised, the mass recovered converts into a time-weighted average concentration for the period you recorded.

What this test does not tell you
  • A time-weighted average cannot show a spike — a cleaning session during the window is averaged away.
  • The badge measures the room it was placed in.
  • This badge measures ammonia only — solvents need the VOC Monitor, formaldehyde the Aldehyde Monitor.
  • There is no consumer-facing residential regulatory limit for ammonia in U.S. indoor air. The report gives a measured concentration against occupational reference points, not a pass/fail.
