A property that has had fentanyl in it looks exactly like one that has not — no smell, no stain, no cue of any kind. For a landlord taking back a unit, a buyer in due diligence, or a fleet manager returning a vehicle to service, that leaves nothing to go on but assumption.
The legal framework is moving toward documentation: California runs its contaminated-property programme under the Methamphetamine or Fentanyl Contaminated Property Cleanup Act, and the EPA has published voluntary cleanup guidelines covering fentanyl. Choose a smooth, non-porous surface — a countertop, finished table, door, hard flooring, a smooth painted wall, an appliance face or a vehicle console. Porous materials (unsealed wood, fabric, carpet, drywall paper) behave completely differently and are not comparable.
Put on clean gloves, lay the 10 cm × 10 cm template flat to define the 100 cm² area, and wipe with firm pressure: vertical pass, fold inward, horizontal pass, fold inward, then a perimeter pass. Seal the wipe in the tube and record the location, surface type, area, date, time and Sample ID. Return in the prepaid mailer.
This kit is for trace surface residue only. Do not collect visible powders, pills, crystals, unknown liquids or paraphernalia. If visible suspected drug material is present, stop and contact local authorities or a licensed remediation contractor.
The laboratory extracts the collected residue from the wipe and analyses the extract by liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry under NIOSH Method 9111M, developed specifically for illicit-drug residues collected from surfaces. Fentanyl is quantified down to a tenth of a microgram.
