Preparing the Nursery: What to Test Before Baby Comes Home
A lab-backed checklist for the room your baby will spend more time in than any other.
Why testing matters more right now
Newborns breathe about twice as fast as adults relative to their body weight, drink only liquid (often reconstituted with tap water), and spend nearly all their time in one or two rooms. That means anything off about the water, air, or surfaces in your nursery has an outsized effect on the smallest person in your home.
The good news: most nursery risks are testable, and most are addressable before baby comes home. The window between "painting the walls" and "setting up the bassinet" is when this is easiest to do.
What to test in the water
If you'll be mixing formula or rinsing pacifiers, your tap water deserves a closer look than your CCR will give you. The three tests that matter most for infants:
Lead — There is no safe level of lead in drinking water for children. If your home was built before 1986, this is non-negotiable.
Bacteria (total coliform and E. coli) — Especially important on well water, but worth testing on city water too if you've had any pressure loss or plumbing work recently.
Nitrates — The EPA limit of 10 mg/L is set specifically to protect infants under six months from methemoglobinemia. Wells near agricultural land or septic systems are highest risk.
What to test in the air
Radon is the single most important air test for any room a baby will sleep in — especially if the nursery is on a lower level. Radon is invisible, comes up from the soil, and is the second-leading cause of lung cancer. A short-term test takes 2-7 days.
VOCs (volatile organic compounds) spike in newly painted, newly carpeted, or newly furnished rooms. New cribs, mattresses, and nursery furniture all off-gas formaldehyde and other VOCs for weeks to months. Ventilate hard, and consider an air test if symptoms appear.
Mold — if there's been any past water damage in the room, or if the nursery is in a basement or finished attic, an air spore trap will tell you whether mold spore counts are elevated.
What to test on the surfaces
If your home was built before 1978, lead paint dust is the single biggest indoor hazard for a crawling baby. EPA dust-lead hazard standards (updated 2024) are 5 micrograms per square foot for floors and 40 µg/sq ft for windowsills. A dust wipe test costs less than dinner out and tells you exactly where the risk is.
Skip the surface tests if your home was built after 1978 and you haven't done renovation that disturbed older painted surfaces.
Timing: do this before the bassinet goes in
Most tests take 3-10 business days to come back from a lab. Aim to collect samples 6-8 weeks before your due date — that gives you time to act on results, install filtration if needed, and re-test if anything came back borderline.
The nursery starter kit
Water: lead + bacteria + nitrate. Air: radon (short-term) + VOCs. Surfaces: lead dust wipes (pre-1978 homes only). Total time to collect: under 30 minutes.
