Old pipes can add what the source water never had.

Lead rarely comes from the source — it dissolves out of a home's own pipes, solder and brass fixtures. That's why the utility's report can't tell you what's in the water at your tap. The only way to know is to test your water.

What to test for

If your home predates the mid-1980s (or you're just not sure), the metals that leach from plumbing are the priority:

  • Lead (Pb) — no safe level; comes from pipes, solder and brass, not the source
  • Copper — leaches from newer plumbing and fittings; causes GI distress at higher levels
  • Other heavy metals — arsenic, chromium, iron, manganese and more
  • Bacteria & the basics — worth a baseline if you've never tested
