← Not sure? Find my test I'm renovating

Before you cut into it, know what's in it.

Disturbing old building materials is exactly when hidden hazards become airborne. A small bulk sample, tested before the work starts, tells you whether that floor tile, mastic or plaster needs a professional — and an air badge tells you what the finished space is off-gassing.

What to test for

Two very different concerns bracket a renovation:

  • Asbestos — in flooring, mastic, plaster, roofing and insulation common before the 1980s (mail in a bulk sample)
  • Formaldehyde — off-gassed by new pressed-wood, cabinetry and flooring
  • VOCs — from fresh paint, adhesives and new furnishings
  • Appearance alone cannot confirm asbestos — only lab microscopy can.
